Texture

Today's class went very well.  My wonderful assistant Elizabeth and all of the students seemed to think our environmental focus was a good idea (or, at least it wasn't annoying that we weren't using crisp white paper!).  Besides using all post-consumer materials, we are also incorporating texture in all we create this week.
We used old pizza boxes, diaper boxes and various cardboard as our canvases.  Our mission was to create a piece of abstract art where the background was monochromatic.  Students had to create 4 separate and distinct textures.  We added glue and rice to paint, we used bubble wrap, toothpicks, marker caps or Q-tips to make different sized dots, we used plastic forks to create a stria effect or added tissue paper to the background. Students were encouraged to create whatever textures they could with anything that was on hand.  We then found natural objects (i.e., a rock, leaf, pine cone, etc.), painted these objects a complementary color and glued them to the backgrounds.  Check back tomorrow for  updated photos of completed work!
It was a very nice introduction to the summer classes.  Here are a few student comments and pics of the initial stage of the artwork:

"I liked using rice for texture."
"You can use 1 color to create depth with texture."
"There is a big difference in the quality of the cardboard.  Pizza boxes are tougher than diaper boxes."

And my personal favorite:
"If you put a blow dryer on high, your artwork blows across the room."
